I enjoyed a delicious Chinese dinner with my family on Christmas Eve. When I opened my fortune cookie, I found………THIS:

While I am not supersticious, I do believe the universe aligns itself in strange and exciting ways sometimes. This is the first fortune that has offered anything more than a vague personality assessment or some lotto numbers. This one is really for ME, and is relevant, and --lets be honest-- kick ass.

I just so happen to be TRAVELLING EAST.
ON SUNDAY.
I’m heading to Jacksonville, Florida for a 2-week residency at the amazing CoRK Arts District. I have mailed 2 boxes of art, 2 boxes of house paint, and 2 boxes of supplies…which should be enough to make something pretty killer with all that unadulterated art-making time.

Halfway through my stay I will be joined by my incredibly talented boyfriend Aaron Brown. We are planning a large collaborative painting/installation.

Our show, INTERLOPERS, opens Friday, February 21 from 6-10 at CoRK Arts District.
2689 Rosselle Street, Jacksonville, Florida 32204

While I am there I plan to see some swamps, the oldest city in the United States, my adorable cousin, and meet a ton of amazing artists. Any suggestions on things to see or do are EXTREMELY welcome! If you’re in the area, please come out and say hi!

Newton’s Third Law echoes through my head every single day. Nothing exists in a vacuum and everything we do has a consequence or side effect. (As Hans Dose pointed out the other day—a hangover is a perfect example.) While it’s easy to see this theory as good connecting to bad, I like to emphasize the flip side to that exchange: bad things can have unexpected positive effects.

I have been creating work based on my own beliefs and misunderstandings of physics and astro physics, trying to visualize the ways science shapes my personal theology. When given the opportunity to show at F Plus Gallery, I decided to share this exercise with some artists I'm particularly keen on. It’s a lot like having my favorite band cover the song that’s been stuck in my head for months.

NEWTON’S THIRD features work in a variety of media from over 30 artists. It is the first show I have curated outside of work since Girls!Girls!Girls! at Phone Booth Gallery. Against my instincts, I will refrain from expounding on the love I have for each of these artists and their limitless talents and just say— it's all killer and no filler with this crowd. Lots of those names are links, so please click!
It's been a minute. Here's a quick review of what'sagoinon:
The magnificient Mickey Kyle is revamping my website. Soon I will be so professional. You won't even recognize me.
My coffin for Boxes of Death sold to a good home.
Bad Cop/Bad Cop is in the studio again, recording some new jams.
I have work in 2 fun events this Saturday:

First - Plywood for Peace: A Benefit for Bridge To Skate
This is a silent auction, raising money to buy skateboards for disadvantaged kids. A ton of fun paintings on recycled skate decks will be available. Mine is titled "Pigboy" and may or may not be based on real persons.

Next, Phone Booth Gallery is hosting LOCALS ONLY: Long Beach themed art from Long Beach based Artists. The flagship image for this show is from the amazing Ryan Milner, and I believe a limited run of prints will be for sale at the opening. I am buying at least 2. So wait for me.

LOCALS ONLY promises to be a comprehensive exhibition of Long Beach pop illustrators, and a hell of a party. So don't miss it! I'm exhibiting a piece from my "permanent collection" (read: hangs in my home because I am a narcissist). Not saying exactly which piece, but it does feature my favorite Long Beach resident of all time.

Locals Only opening reception is from 7-10 PM

This Saturday at the Hive Gallery, I am a “featured artist” in Chroma GoGo, the Splendor Device tribute to Lisa Frank. Honestly, I can’t think of a more capable group of artists to tackle this heavy issue.

As a girl, I knew Lisa Frank was talking directly to me. It’s great to feel acknowledged as a very young person. I also appreciate that Lisa Frank is one of few brands focusing more on what appeals to girls, rather than trying to shape them.

I've always preferred art and over-shooting school projects with my engineer Dad to horses, dolls or paperback series. Even as an adult, it has not been easy finding common ground for my love of both glitter and power tools.
In addition to installing some of my more typical pieces, I have created a body of work meant to playfully challenge gender divisions set forth in children’s toys.

"Lollisaw" 16"x10"x2" acrylic and glitter on mixed media
AR4T sent out these photos, from left to right: Scott Hove, Nick Simich, and Corey Smith.

I’m back home from 8 days in Cocoa Beach, Florida with a buncha cool new tanlines and some serious inspiration. I flew out to set up a Hurley art wall at the Ron Jon Beach and Boards Fest, (an amateur surf competition) and had the pleasure of painting with some truly incredible artists.

While I was there, I got to paint with Stink from Costa Mesa—who taught me about a million apps I need to get on my phone if I ever hope to keep up with the kids. (above: Stink/Jennie/Shaun collaboration inspired by aggressive wind at the beach)

Shaun Thurston from Jacksonville, FL (above: Shaun is crazy with a can…and I am regular with a brush. GO TEAM!)

and INOPE, based out of Savannah, GA, pictured below as the grand master of spray cans. Shaun and Inope were some of the fastest, bravest painters I have ever seen. It was a serious treat meeting them and working with them on this project!

I hope to find good and lucrative excuses to get both of them out to California to share their art!
Florida's very own Shaun Thurston will be killing it on the 7th and 8th, and INOPE is closing it out on the 9th and 10th.
Lastly: do get down to Laguna Beach on Saturday to peep This Wilde Abyss. There's some fantastic work from some super cool ladies on display!
Just for you, this Saturday I will be using all of my creative talents in one convenient location:
AR4T, for the opening reception of Splendor Device’s newest group exhibition THIS WILDE ABYSS.

Check out this fantastic flyer with art by Jennifer James. Splendor Device is an all-female art collective headed by Kelly Castillo. THIS WILDE ABYSS will feature work from some of my personal favorites: Sara Haase, Jel Ena, Allison Peairs, Elizabeth Caffey, Kristi Bockrath, Amy Kaplan….I could go on, read the flyer. All of those ladies are dripping with talent. It’s gonna be good, you guys.

The fabulous musician/artist Sara M Lyons and I are performing at the opening reception as Library Sciences. This will be the first-ever live Library Sciences show and we’ll be practicing all week. Our illustrated audio zines will be for sale at the reception as well. (In case you love it.)

I’ve got a NEW piece in the show that is borne of my watching and rewatching Carl Sagan’s COSMOS over the past several weeks.
It’s called Cosmology, and it is inspired by the existence of parallel universes.
Charcoal and acrylic on wood with glitter and light fixture. Yes I said glitter. It is all over my house forever. Sometimes you make sacrifices for art.
I posted one photo of this and have had a rash of people freaking out about this representing duplicity or mutation. I would first like to say: RELAX. It's okay if art makes you uncomfortable, but I also don't think this deserves to be labeled "disturbing." The figure is meant to be reflected as well as connected--referencing the possibility of another us in another universe, amidst infinite other universes and possibilities. At the center, I tried to visualize the creation of worlds, with a swirling movement to echo the shape of many galaxies. The figure is reflected again in a pool of stars, to imply again that these universes are infinite.

There's a little sidebar in the February issue of Rivera Magazine... Go getcherself a copy:
Incredible superwoman Chantal deFelice talks with Kelsi Maree about the Orange County art scene.(and looks like a model in the photo, PS). In discussing our emerging art community, Chantal lists 3 fellow artists whose work she admires….and it’s me and my pretty BFFs Yevgeniya Mikhailik and Nancy Chiu!!! I’m dying. It’s so cool. I love these ladies so much. (Nancy just opened up an awesome Etsy shop, go here to check it out!)

Ohhhh Chantal. You are such a bad ass. Malcolm Gladwell pointed out that something like 5% of people are responsible for 100% of the action, and I couldn’t agree more. If you ask me who's pulling a lot of the weight in the Orange County art community, I would list Chantal, Torrey Cook of AR4T and OCAR, Kelly Castillo from Rothick Art Haus and Dr. Sketchy’s OC, Amy Kaplan from F+, and Yevgeniya’s work with Grand Central Art Center. Meet these women. Check out their work. Give them a high five and thank them for making things happen.

Also,
At work, for my real job…at Hurley, JOSHR and I finished our FOURTH mural of 2013 (this one is ours, the other 3 were Daleks) for our friends in the Finance Department. Here it is. Thanks to Derek Bahn for the photo!
I did almost nothing for nearly a month….except put out a record. If you wanna see that click here. I’m gearing up for a few group shows opening in March. Here are some process shots of a piece I’m working on for This Wilde Abyss. The 3D element is meant to be a swirling vortex of creation. I’m sure that’s coming across EXACTLY as planned…

More to come on this and other projects soon.

I make customized wedding cake toppers. So far, everybody has wanted a mini version of themselves. I will ask you to send me your favorite photos and pics of what you'll be wearing and any relevant color swatches or reference images (are we including your tattoos? Will you be zombies? or in formal wear?) and I make you out of paper clay.
Here is the most recent cake-topper for my friends Wes and Erica:

If you would like something like this for yourself or a friend, email me! To cover costs of time and materials they are $200-$300 depending on the design and the size.

But it's the end of the year, everything is crazy, and there's no time. So you get ONE GIANT BLOG. Carl Sagan: eat your heart out (or turn over in your grave. Whatever.) Space Creeps and Tasty Treats, the mural I painted with JOSHR and Trace Mendoza, is finished. In fact, it’s been finished!! But we’ve been busy. So. This is the story.

We invited the lovable and talented Trace Mendoza to our office to discuss repainting the side of Wahoo’s Fish Taco on Bristol and Baker in Costa Mesa. We loaded up the van and blacked out a Jason Maloney/Bigfoot/Bwana Spoons mural to make way for our outer space adventure.

I had the pleasure participating in and wrangling artists for the 2012 Anti Canvas Event in Hawaii. This is where rad artists put their work on board shorts and auction them off for a charity of their choosing. I chose Kokua Hawaii as my charity. If you're in Hawaii this weekend, go see it!

I'll be in the huuuuuuuge, super awesome, super communist Post-It Show 8 at Giant Robot. Opening Saturday, December 8, from 6-10, all pieces (over 2000 of them….) are on 3”x3” post-its, and they’re ALL $25. Even when they’re painted by Audrey Kawasaki and Souther Salazar. Don’t miss it. Unless you’re coming to see my band that night at the Prospector in Long Beach….
Last thing: 225 Forest is having their final art show this Thursday night. It has been a pleasure curating and hosting shows there this year. I'm grateful for the opportunity and am sad to see it close. If you're in Laguna, stop by!

My painting was won by talented artist and cool dude David Coyne (pictured below with thumbs up).

Got some good news and fun stuff coming up. If you’re in Long Beach this weekend, stop by Phone Booth Gallery on Saturday from 5-10 for the opening reception of Dave Rankin’s “Sea, Snakes, and Spikes.” PBG is hosting a Live Painting & Art Raffle at the same time. A $5 ticket could win you a fresh, original painting from one of 7 local artists (one of them: meeeee). I got to see some of Dave’s pieces while picking up my panel for the live paint. He’s a little tricky to find on the internets, and his work is really stunning. So come see ‘em! (below: Dave Rankin's "Eel Charmer")

On Monday I’ll be starting another Wahoo’s mural with two rad dudes: JOSHR and Trace Mendoza. I’m super excited to paint with these guys. We’re repainting the Wahoo’s on Bristol in Costa Mesa, and the wall is….huge. It’s gonna be a ton of fun. Expect to see some process shots of that next week! We're rolling over a Jason Maloney/Bigfoot/Bwana Spoons mural (pictured below)...so we'd better make it awesome.

Not only am I stoked to show in such a cool gallery, but I’m exhibiting with some of my very favorite artists and humans including Yevgeniya Mikhailik and Nancy Chiu. If you’re reading this, you are probably familiar with their work. If you’re not, go look right now! They are two of the most talented and beautiful women I have ever met. Prepare for mega art crush…
Anyway. Here’s an interview I did with Chantal about the show.
Come out on the 17th!

Before you scamper off to enjoy your weekends, let me remind you of a certain ebay listing...of a certain creepy baby coffin...that ends on Monday. Here's the link again if you're interested in bidding on/scoring something I made for pretty cheap. I get half the money from the sale.

This fantastic matrix of paintings over here is a recap from the 2010 Phone Booth Gallery live painting raffle. Guests bought tickets for $1 each to try and win one of eight cool 24"x24" original paintings. Good news for you: WE'RE DOING IT AGAIN. Saturday, November 10 from 5-10 PM, Phone Booth Gallery is hosting the opening reception for Dave Rankin's "Sea, Snakes, and Spikes" along with a live painting raffle. Come by to lay eyes on Dave's awesome sea creatures, and bring a few bucks for some tickets. You could win a WET original painting from rad Long Beach artists David Owen, Jenny Messock, Kevin Bannister, Mariya Suzuki, Nick Marquez, Ryan Milner and me.
Here's a nice little montage of my painting at the 2010 live paint, as documented by my dear, talented BFF.F.F. Sara M. Lyons. She's a whiz with the Photoshop.
I promise not to paint barf this year!!

Hey! Here's a bit of everything to keep you (the internet) in the loop. Heads up: this post is reeeeeal link-y...so go ahead and click on things. I'm sending you all over the place.
JOSHR and I finished our mural down at Wahoo's in Laguna Beach. We had a blast working on it and have loosely discussed inviting everybody down to drink a beer in front of it. We'll put a pin in that for now...
Enjoy this ridiculous video the amazing YB made of the whole thing.

As advised by the wise and hilarious Ryan Calimlim and Shaun Redsar, I've made a Facebook page for my art. Yesterday, I wrapped up a few days of painting with my good friend, artist, coworker, all-around weird and talented human, Josh Grelock. Find more of his art under JOSHR.
We painted "Hurley Clam Jam" on the outside patio of the Wahoo's Fish Taco on PCH in Laguna Beach. It was super fun and we did whatever we wanted. If you're in the neighborhood, pick up a taco and feast your eyes on our collaboration. Stay tuned for a photo without a giant disruptive shadow...

We are wrapping up the 2nd issue of Library Sciences for APE this weekend in San Francisco!
Library Sciences is a collaborative, hand-made, lo-fi, audio zine created by me and my best friend Miss Sara M. Lyons. Go check her out. She's amazing.
Each issue of Library Sciences comes with a cd of 6 original songs (3 from me, 3 from Sara with some overlap) and an accompanying illustrated booklet on a theme. We sold out of Issue One at LA Zine Fest in February, so we've made a bunch of those and debuting Issue Two.
Here's what it looks like when we record:

Sara's set up is on the left, mine on the right.
This issue's theme is (loosely) self-actualization. But there is still a song about a dream dog, so don't take it too seriously.
If you're in the bay area this weekend, stop by and say hi! We're tabling with the incredible and long-legged Kelsey Short! (that's a link too, so click it!)
While you're clicking, here's our reverb nation. Take a listen.jennie cotterillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12850745120350500869noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7271182943293230019.post-85084734198875520172012-10-08T09:44:00.001-07:002012-10-08T09:44:52.794-07:00Monstoberfest at Rothick Art HausThis Saturday is the 3rd annual Monsteberfest at Rothick Art Haus. I made a stuffed friend for the show, and a huge mess in my house. see below.

Unfortunately, I will not be in town for the opening, but anybody who is within driving distance to Anaheim this Saturday should do themselves a favor and check it out. Irene Mendonis, adorable spritely fabricator extraordinaire, has curated a killer show for you. While dropping off my little dude at the gallery, I got to see a ton of really cool work from the other artists. A fair amount of what I saw was painting, but I did lay eyes on a particularly bitchin' papier mache sculpture of a 2-headed girl. Gonna have to check and see who made it.
Here's my dude:

She/he/it is made of various plush, with a string of innards you can pull out of the chest cavity including lungs, a heart, a liver, large and small intestine. The empty cavity is lined with pink ostrich-skin plush. The cheeks are felted fleece, claws, ribs and teeth are vinyl, and eyes are flocked buttons. This dude is about 40" tall and 28" wide. Pretty silly.
Monstoberfest opens Saturday, October 13 at 7 pm.
Rothick Art Haus is located at 170 S. Harbor Blvd, Anaheim CA 92805

Thanks, everyone, for coming out. Thanks, artists, for making such fun pieces. Be sure to stop by and check out the show if you're ever in Laguna Beach this month. The coolest candy store ever is just next door if you need another reason to get over there. Matthew Hodges, of the dudely artist collective 29 made this little video (with and exceptional soundtrack, I might add) of the evening:
This Thursday, 6-9 pm at 225 Forest Ave in Laguna Beach. Come down. Carpool (parking sucks). Eat snacks. Have a blast. There's a super cool band called the Vooduo playing a couple of sets and over 75 original works of spooky art on skate decks. I'm sharing mine now as I will be too busy hanging/prepping the show to share later.
I made one along with Sara Hasse to represent Splendor Device (our totally rad, totally female art collective.) While I'm not sure on all the details..stay tuned...I wanted to share what I made. Sara's will be super cool and semi-related to mine. You are going to want to find BOTH of ours.
